Classification of Gingival Diseases
Gum disease is usually include inflammation of the gum tissue, most often in response to bacterial plaque biofilm. Certain characteristics must be present on periodontal to be classified as a disease of the gums (box 14-1). In 1999 AAP classification of periodontal diseases
and conditions divides gum disease into two main categories: (1) plaque-induced diseases of the gums and (2) the surrender of a RAID-induced destruction of the gums. Each of these major categories is two or more categories (Fig. 14-1).
