Hematologic Disorders

Hematologic violations are violations in the structure and function of the blood and blood-forming tissue such as erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, or blood clotting factors. There are many rare hematologic disorders that can affect the periodontal {field 17-2).

A. Acquired Neutropenia

1. Neutropenia is a blood disorder characterized by abnormally low levels of neutrophils (PMNs) in the blood.

2. Neutropenia has many causes. It can be genetic or may be seen with viral infections and after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It affects one in three patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer treatment.

3. Neutropenia reduces immune barrier, bacterial and fungal infection.

4. Neutrophils disorders that affect the production or function of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) can cause serious damage periodontal (box 17-3).

B. Leukemia

1. Leukemia is cancer that begins in cells of the blood. People with leukemia, the bone marrow produces a large number of abnormal white blood cells that do not function properly.

2. First, leukemia cells function almost normally. At the moment, they could displace normal white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.

3. Periodontal symptoms leukemia include gingival enlargement, bleeding and infection (box 17-4).

C. AIDS/HIV

1. Linear gingival erythema (LGE) and necrotizing periodontal (NPD) are the most common HIV-related periodontal conditions described in the literature [3].

a. Linear gingival erythema (LGE) gums manifestation of immunosuppression.

B. The clinical picture LGE is characterized by a clear linear erythematous (red) range, limited free gum (the box. 17-5).

c. LGE does not respond to self-improvement or periodontal instruments.

2. Periodontal loss of investment and alveolar bone fracture associated with HIV-infected people can be very fast (box 17-5) [4]. Hematology oncology blood disorders
